All public and private schools at every level have a responsibility to protect their students and to create safe learning conditions. The educational field has performed an excellent job in describing and studying the effects of oil consumption related to environmental and health outcomes, but not very successful in actually CHANGING people’s BEHAVIOR.
The strong recommendation is to use the artigraph products in a pro-active program to reduce oil consumption. Posting the artworks, implementing campus-wide events and very importantly completing the Personal Snapshot Survey of Your Oil Consumption for all staff and students. The Survey produces immediate feedback because it has a grading system that everyone will relate to and should be part of every sustainability and environmental program. Get your A’s and B’s or at least start with C’s but avoid those D’s and F’s.
Schools can implement social and perhaps monetary rewards to staff and students who make progress in reducing their oil consumption. Aggregate statistics, perhaps annually or semi-annually, to measure progress would be straightforward. Another innovative project is for the students to vote on whether or not to include their families in this program. To expand into the general community.
CONFRONTING THE CRISES ON COLLEGIATE CAMPUSES - WAR DEMONSTRATES, DIVESTMENT ISSUES, AND OIL CONSUMPTION
The Artigraph titled, Israel’s Warring Neighbors & Russia 2011-2023, depicts an Arc of War extending from North Africa, the Middle East, and to Eastern Europe with an estimated 1.7 to 1.8 million casualties (as of December 2023 & counting). It tragically illustrates how war has become a way of life in this region and also marks the contagion of World War III if the hostile aggressors are victorious. The objective of the artwork was to convey the context of the regional warfare during the twelve years before Hamas invaded Israel.
Calls for divestment on college campuses have been requested for one specific conflict comprising less than one-tenth of the casualties (about 129,220 as of June 2024) when compared to the surrounding warring neighbors. The collegiate and secular worlds cannot ignore the totality of conflicts; otherwise, you would be guilty of Anti-Semitism.
An effective solution to the conundrum is to Divest from Oil Consumption.
This economic and political approach impacts warfare everywhere!
Refer to the artigraph titled, “Oil & Autocracies” to view where much of the world’s oil originates from and the countries involved in most recent and current wars. It all lines up.
Major points that are not ranked in order of importance but are all valid:
· Oil financially supports all the wars from North Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe
· The only effective long-term countermeasure is to Decrease Oil Consumption by either replacement or engine efficiency. Sanctions are solely partial short-term fixes. The two approaches are more powerful when combined.
· There is no moral equivalency in Ukraine struggling against the Russian invasion or Israel’s defense of Hamas’ invasion. The aggressors are on the call first.
· There are additional Climate Change, Health, Economic, and Social Benefits when oil consumption is substantially reduced, thus multiplying the efficacy of this approach.
· The collegiate research powerhouses have trailblazed the scientific description of Climate Change and Health outcomes from humankind using fossil fuels and should be reliable leaders in reducing oil consumption.
Portfolio #1 consisting of fourteen artworks is for sale for one reasonable price. The images can be inserted into course curriculum and/or displayed publicly as part of your oil reduction campaign.
